NFHS Basketball Rules Practice Exam

When a player shoots a free throw, the ball must be released without any violation of the shooting rules. If the player bounces the ball off the floor during the free throw attempt, it results in the immediate end of that free throw. This action alters the traditional mechanics of the free throw, as the player is essentially not shooting directly at the hoop after having violated the standard procedure. The rules clearly dictate that the free throw must be taken in one continuous motion directly toward the basket without the ball touching the floor or being interrupted in that way.

In this context, the other options do not pertain to the ruling. Resetting a free throw typically occurs due to other violations, while counting it as a failed attempt does not accurately reflect that the shot was invalidated immediately due to the rule violation. Generating a technical foul is reserved for more severe infractions that do not apply in this case of bouncing the ball. Therefore, ending the free throw is the correct interpretation of the rule regarding the bouncing of the ball during the attempt.
